Profile of the college

Established in 1945 as Government Training College and inaugurated on 4th July by Sir George Boag, then Dewan of Cochin. It remained as an eminent teacher training institute to churn out teachers of excellence. It was at first affiliated to the University of Madras. The college was wound up as a measure of retrenchment with the integration of Travancore and Cochin in 1949.

It was restarted in 1951 by affiliating it to Travancore University. The college has got affiliation to the University of Calicut in 1968. The College has been elevated to the status of Institute of Advanced Study in Education since 1993 with a view to conduct advanced courses in education, research programmes and to organize In-service training to the secondary and higher secondary school teachers.

The institution conducts M.Ed. course with an intake of 25 students. The B.Ed course still continues for both men and women in eight subjects :-

  • Sanskrit
  • Hindi
  • English
  • Social Science
  • Mathematics
  • Natural science
  • Physical science

The college celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2006. The Institute has good percentage of success in the Public Examinations every year. There are efficient teacher educators to handle every subject.

The academic year starts from October with the summer vacation in April-May in between the ten month long course. The teaching practice is for thirty days amidst the course which is a rich experience for the B.Ed trainees. The students are always engaged in a hive of activities with practicums, presentations, practicals, workshops, seminars, debates, field-trips, study tours, and co-curricular activities.

There are associations for every department and they function very well. There is a Nature Club, a Tourism Club, and the like to name a few. The Community Living Camp is a part of the curriculum and is held for three days. The students learn to live together in harmony with the community rendering services to the humanity. The college has conducted In-Service courses for high school teachers and school administrators in the past and is well on its way in extension activities.
